FAT32 limits file sizes to 4GB and device sizes to 8TB. For you to be able to store a file greater than 4GB in size, you'd need to reformat the drive to either ExFAT (file size is limited to 16EB, or 16 BILLION TB) or a MacOS partition format (called HFS plus, file size limited to 8EB, or 8 BILLION TB). Hey, I own a Mac as well, and I used Boot Camp to install Windows and OS X both on my hard drive. I use OS X most of the time, but having windows 7 available when I need is great, especially since this is my only computer. If you want you can even have Ubuntu linux on there as well, but that's a little harder to do haha. Installing Windows with Boot Camp on your Mac is a piece of cake, it's really a seamless process, and Windows will work great on your mac. If you can afford a copy of Windows 7 (if not, there are certain illegal methods available:/ ) then I'd say go for it. Thousands of people search for this online every month and they also search. The sad reality is that they won’t find anything. At least, not right now. There are some iOS exclusive titles I’d like to play myself. But with my and Android phone, that’s just not possible. I did some digging though. I wanted to know why. I wanted to know what the closest thing to an emulator is that we have available to us. If you’ve been asking yourself these questions, you’ll be happy to hear that I’ve found the answers. Read on to discover why no emulators exist, what the difference is between simulators and emulators, and what your alternatives are to iOS emulators. Contents • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • What Is An iOS Emulator And A iOS Simulator? You probably know what an emulator is. It’s a program that “emulates” the hardware of a machine, right? ![]() It clones the operating environment by using the source code of the original machine. Much like the and emulators that are so popular and available on just about any platform. Who doesn’t like a little Mario Bros or other classics every now and then? Just as a side note on this, make sure you actually own the games. Downloading roms is definitely illegal if you don’t – just so you know. But as long as you own the games, there’s nothing wrong with a little classic Pokemon (red, yellow and blue on the GBA!), or Ogre Battle – or whatever your fancy is in games (let us know in the comments what you love to play?). Onedrive app for mac. Anyway and then there are simulators A simulator doesn’t clone the behaviour of the hardware, like an emulator does. It simply “simulates” the UI and some basic functionality. So while you’ve got a program that looks like an iPhone and feels like an iPhone, it is not an iPhone (or a duck). So when you download one of these simulators, you’ll soon find that you can’t download and install any apps on them. They have only the most basic of functionality. It basically just clones the UI and that’s it. So while you can explore the interface, you can’t do very much else (most times you won’t be able to open anything – just scroll around and that’s it). Difference between Emulator and Simulator – Video credit by Wait, Why Do We Want An Actual Emulator? Well, the first and most obvious reason would be to have some fun playing our favourite titles. Or maybe you’re considering buying an iPhone, but you’d like to try it out first? Developers, especially, would find a good emulator useful. At the present moment, you need an IDE like to be able to test out your app. But having a lightweight, working emulator is what we truly need. Just imagine being able to get feedback from all your friends – before your app is released on the store. Now, there are some pretty decent iOS emulators for Android. But they just don’t run iOS apps very well. Laggy and buggy, they need a lot of work. As you’ll discover at the end of this article, however, the iOS emulators for Android are our best bet at having a fully-fledged iOS emulator in the future. And since basically everyone either has an Android phone or an iPhone, that makes perfect sense. There are good Android emulators for PC though. Would you like a list of these? Let us know in the comments below Why Can We Emulate Android On PC, But Not iOS? The answer is quite simple. Android is, whereas iOS is. Well, Android is partially open source, and iOS partially closed. But we won’t go into great detail right now. The point is you can get hold of all the source code you need to create Android emulators that are effective. And with Apple, well, you’d probably need to hack into Apple’s system with the help of an insider. But definitely don’t try that. I wouldn’t want you to end up in jail. Apple’s licensing is more strict than Android’s. They don’t publish their source code openly, and that makes creating a true emulator extremely difficult. Sure, there are bits of Apple’s source code that have been published. But not nearly enough to create a real emulator. So when running a simulator, you won’t be able to load your Apple ID or Jailbreak. You won’t be able to run any apps effectively. It’s basically just a clone of an iPhone’s UI. Maybe one day Apple will change their ways, and be more like Android. So devs can easily pick up the source code and create solid iOS emulators for both Windows and Mac. It would make the developer’s life so much easier. What Are Our Alternatives To Emulators? Two big mentions, before we get to the reviews section, is Android Studio and Xcode. Printopia gives you Air Printing with other printers If you’re like me you have an iDevice or two that is capable of air printing but you don’t have an air printer. If you have a Mac running on the same wifi network as your iDevices the problem is solved with a piece of software for your Mac called from ECamm. Printopia comes in a demo version which you can use for a week to see if this product is really for you. (Thumbs up for this — I’ve noticed more and more companies aren’t providing demo versions. Full version is US$19.95 — totally worth it in my opinion.) Install it on your Mac and set up the printers you want to share. An added benefit here for Dropbox users is that ‘Send to Dropbox’ is one of your print options! Once you’ve set up Printopia and sharing is on you can now check out your iDevices. I initially tested this in Safari but this works anywhere where there’s a print option. I opened a web page and touched the print icon. There are four options, the last one being Print. After a moment a PDF will pop up on your Mac desktop and print to the selected device. It’s a similar process with your iPhone. I’m running a 3GS and it worked fine so will work well with your iPhone 4 too. Both my iPhone 3GS and iPad 1 are running the latest updates (4.3.2). Both printed actual paper copies of the web pages I selected but more importantly for me, both sent the selected pages & photos to my Dropbox. Printopia created a folder in the main directory called Printopia. It was a simple matter to then open my Dropbox and find the PDF version of the page/photo I’d printed waiting for me. On a side note I discovered it was a very easy way to send my screenshots from my iDevices to my Mac without syncing or emailing them. I ‘printed’ them to my Dropbox! In a sense that there’s an actuator, a reading system and a bunch of platters on which the data is stored. But some drives differ from others in application. WD has been a master at highlighting this in the past, crafting its colour-coded drives to be adept at handling multiple situations, from the WD Red drives for mass storage solutions to the gaming-orientated WD Black rapid spinners. This doesn’t just stop with internal drives though. The company has been outing various external drives for different uses, including a rather interesting drive for consoles. But we recently had a go at the My Passport for Mac drive, and as you probably guessed by the name, is designed for Apple ecosystems. While the My Passport for Mac might be your typical standard 2.5-inch hard drive, it’s designed to play nicely with Apple OS X’s file system from the get go. Of course, that’s just reducing it. Keyboard shortcuts for gmail mac os. While we won’t go into all of that (because, to be fairly honest, it’s boring), this benefits the consumer in a number of ways that are less apparent than first noticeable. The drives now support storage sizes of up to 3TB, but we got hold of a 1TB unit, the size that most consumers will probably eye. And while I mentioned the eye, it also mirrors Apple products’ look and feel. There’s a textured metallic finish to each drive, with a bundled USB cable alongside it in the packaging. It should be noted that like its more expensive Mac drive counterparts, it isn’t entirely metal, but that does mean it saves on price and weight. We’re not sure why there’s a lack of a USB-to-Lightning cable which would’ve really made it a distinctly Apple-orientated drive, but it’s not immediately important. Nevertheless, it does use the much faster USB 3.0 interface, so not all is lost. ![]()
And if you’re one of the sane people on the internet interested in security, the drive can be digitally locked thanks to WD’s bundled encryption tool. You can set a drive-wide password, which restricts access to data unless you manage to guess the password correctly, or completely wipe the drive in an instant if you’re interested in starting over. There are a number of diagnostic tools available too, which allows users to manage the health of the drive, which was a very nice touch. I can’t quite recall seeing this particular portion of the WD Drive Utilities on Windows-orientated drives. And as for performance? You should achieve read/writes of anything from 80MB/s to 100MB/s depending on drive load, drive temperature or file size transferred. I don’t typically enjoy running benchmark tools because they differ vastly from real world performance, but in this case, I found the My Passport for Mac to be mostly reliable in its transfer speeds. Finally, WD offers a three year warranty with these drives, but we can’t exactly comment on whether or not that’s long enough. We would love to see another two years pegged onto that figure. Verdict: If you happen to harbour more Apple products than you can count and need a good looking, relatively swift and dependable external drive, you can’t go too wrong with the WD My Passport for Mac. While you could just buy any external drive and bolt it on (after reformatting, of course), the WD My Passport for Mac does feature useful Mac-centric tools. As a backup solution or temporary storage box, WD’s solution is fairly slick for just south of R1200. Score: 9/10 • • • • • • • •. ImgBurn is free a DVD and Blu-ray recording application.
